“Now listen! Today I am giving you a choice between life and death, between prosperity and disaster. For I command you this day to love the Lord your God and to keep his commands, decrees, and regulations by walking in his ways. If you do this, you will live and multiply, and the Lord your God will bless you and the land you are about to enter and occupy. “But if your heart turns away and you refuse to listen, and if you are drawn away to serve and worship other gods, then I warn you now that you will certainly be destroyed. You will not live a long, good life in the land you are crossing the Jordan to occupy. “Today I have given you the choice between life and death, between blessings and curses. Now I call on heaven and earth to witness the choice you make. Oh, that you would choose life, so that you and your descendants might live! You can make this choice by loving the Lord your God, obeying him, and committing yourself firmly to him. This is the key to your life. And if you love and obey the Lord, you will live long in the land the Lord swore to give your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.” (Deut. 30:15-20)
The Exodus out of Egypt was a journey filled with the Father's provision and protection in spite of the Israelites' outrageous acts of idolatry and disbelief. It was a journey lost in the wilderness that took way too long because of doubt and a heart's cry of a people desiring to go back to Egypt. An entire generation of Israelites had died but the faithfulness of a loving God is still available!
In our text the Lord has presented two doors before the people, one filled with life and blessings and the other filled with death and curses. Each door was wide open and the choice was theirs to make.
The first door would lead them into to a life flowing with the Lord's provision, protection and peace. Choosing to go through this door would release unto them a future filled with hope and prosperity. It was a door leading God's people to a life of abundance and endless dreams. The second door would lead them into a life void of peace and filled with more aimless wandering. It was a door opened to a life governed by their own limitations and strength. By walking through this door the Israelites would be walking right back into captivity and bondage.
I love how the New Living Translation Bible records the last part of verse 19, “oh that you would choose life.” To me it expresses the heart and extravagant love of the Father. It was as if He and all of heaven were rooting the people on crying out "oh that you would choose life and blessing!"
My friends it is the same for you and me today. The Father has called all heaven and earth as a witness against us, that He has set before us the same two doors. One filled with life and blessings the other filled with death and curses. The choice is ours.
Jesus said in John 6:63 “it is the Spirit who gives life, the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life”. In other words, true life and abundance come when we respond to the word as the Spirit reveals it to us.
The following text in Deuteronomy 30 truly reveals the brilliance of God, by the simplicity of how He makes this life of abundant grace and blessing available. He simply declares in verse 20 “that you love the Lord your God, that you may obey His voice and that you cling to Him for He is your life and length of days”.
Friends, He has given us everything we need to live in this life of abundance. We have His wisdom through the Word and the revelation of it through the fellowship of His Holy Spirit. Jesus in the word has promised us that if we ask we will receive, if we seek we will find and if we knock it will be opened to us.
Let 2014 be the year that you boldly enter into the life that He has established for you. Let this be the year where you truly fall in love with everything that Jesus loves, and fall out of love with everything He hates.
His promises are as real today as they were when they were recorded in His word. The Promise Land is truly flowing with milk and honey and the word declares we can have it on this earth now. Remember, the same God left both doors open and the same God is still crying out “oh that you would choose life”.
Blessings and enjoy the journey to freedom.
